


Introduction to Food Preservation and Fermentation at Home
Friday 29 August 2025 9.30am - 12.30pm
Step into the world of traditional food preservation in this hands-on, 3-hour workshop with Jordy from Little Patch Project. Perfect for foodies, health enthusiasts, and curious beginners alike, this session offers an exploration into the art and science of fermentation, along with an overview of other simple, effective preserving methods for the home.
In this fun and practical workshop, you'll learn how to create your own:
Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi
Pickled vegetables, such as carrots or cucumbers (a hit with kids!)
Bottled preserves such as chutney, relish, or jam
You will have the opportunity to taste foods throughout the day and make and take home a jar of each preserving style. Printed recipes will be given out on the day and a digital version emailed to you after the workshop.
You'll discover:
How to safely and confidently prepare fermented and preserved foods at home
The health benefits of fermented foods, from improved digestion to boosted immunity
Troubleshooting tips to help you succeed with your ferments
Seasonal wisdom—why late autumn and winter are ideal times to make kraut and kimchi, when ingredients are abundant and the cold weather invites us indoors
Workshop Details:
Hands-on learning in pairs
Take-home jars of your own ferments and preserves
What to Bring:
Aprons recommended (please bring your own if desired)
4 wide mouth jars with lids, up to 500ml each (1 of these jars will be used for fermentation).
If you would prefer to purchase an all-in-one fermentation kit, the are available to buy at check out. A limited number of kits will also be available on the day.
Note: you will only need 1 fermentation kit or 1 jar per participant.
Come for the knowledge, stay for the fun, and leave with jars full of goodness!
Location: The Kitchen, Hurstbridge Hub, 50 Graysharps Road, Hursbridge
Transport:
Train - The Hub is a 500m walk from Hurstbridge train station
Car - Free parking available onsite. Additional long-term parking is also available at the Ben Friday Oval located at 36 Graysharps Road, Hurstbridge
Bus - The Hub is a 650m walk from the Bus 343 Hurstbridge Station/Heidelberg-Kinglake Rd stop.
Both the train and bus are wheelchair accessible, and the route to the Hub is along sealed footpaths without steps.
Note on Ingredients: Ingredients will be clearly labelled but due to using a shared space and other limitations, alterations to recipes will not generally be possible.
